Classwork
English 9 - Today we began the outline for the Antigone essay. We began by reading the 3 essay prompts. Students then chose the prompt they will respond to and broke down the prompt to make sure they understood what the prompt asked them to do. The majority of the class chose to respond to prompt one and some of the class chose to respond to prompt 2. No one chose prompt 3. Here is how we broke down each prompt in class today:
Breaking down the prompt
Directions: To write an effective essay, it is essential to have a clear understanding of what
the prompt asks you to do. Read the prompt and then answer the following questions and use them as a guide toward effectively answering the prompt.
Prompt 1 - Antigone argues that the rules of nature and the individual, at times, are more important than the rules of the government. As a result, she conducts an act of civil disobedience, in which she deliberately violates a government law that she believes is unjust. Write a persuasive essay discussing whether Antigone was right or wrong in her act of civil disobedience.
1. What does the prompt tell you to do? If anything, write it here:
Write a persuasive essay discussing whether Antigone was right or wrong in her act of
civil disobedience.
Find concrete details that support your answer.
* Find an example where Antigone explains why she is breaking Creon’s law.
* Find an example where Creon explains why he made that law.
* If you support Antigone find two examples where Ismene/Haemon/The
Chorus/Tiresius/Creon support Antigone.
* If you do not support Antigone find two examples where
Ismene/Chorus/Creon oppose Antigone.
2. Does the prompt ask questions? If so, write the question(s) here:
Was Antigone right or wrong in her act of civil disobedience?
Prompt 2 - Compare Antigone’s actions in the play to the expected roles for women in Ancient Greek society. Why did Antigone depart from these rigid norms? Organize your thoughts so that they reflect the traditional expectations, Antigone’s departure from these expectations, and your justification of her actions.

is your first body paragraph (Creon/Chorus/Ismene/maybe others).
* Find examples that show Antigone breaking the normal expectations of women – 2
examples from Messenger/The Chorus/Creon/Haemon/Antigone/Ismene.
* The Justification is your analysis.
2. Does the prompt ask questions? If so, write the question(s) here:

English 10 - Many students did not have their body paragraph typed and ready to turn in. This made it impossible to do the review that was planned for today. Students that were ready received the full 20 points for the assignment. Instead of peer editing today, we took a short quiz on identifying the different elements of the body paragraph, went over the requirements for the dialectical journal assignment for part 2 of Things Fall Apart, and then we read chapter 14 in Things Fall Apart. Click on the file below to see the dialectical journal we started in class. There are two entries for chapter 14 in the sample!
