CAN I EAT AND DRINK IN CLASS?
Only water in plastic or metal bottles is allowed. There is no eating in class – it distracts from our learning and brings ants and mice in the classroom. That’s what we have breaks for.
I MISSED CLASS.... DID I MISS ANYTHING?
Yes. If you miss class, you’re still responsible for completing the assignments and being prepared for the next class meeting. You have three ways to catch up:
1) assignments and helpful information are posted on blackboard.sduhsd.com
2) contact your study partner
3) contact me
My rule for accepting work after an absence is you have the same amount of time that you were absent to turn in the work. For example, if you miss two days of school because you are sick, upon your return to school you have two days to complete and submit the work for full credit. After that it is considered late.
MR. BALOGH, WILL YOU ACCEPT MY LATE WORK?
You may turn work in late but it will receive no more than 50% credit and WILL NOT be accepted later than the next school day. Please read the rules for essay, projects, and presentations; they’re a bit different.
WHEN DOES MY WORK BECOME LATE?
Work not submitted on time is considered late. For example, if homework is collected at the beginning of the class and you submit your homework at any point there after it is considered late.
DO THE LATE WORK RULES APPLY TO ESSAYS, PROJECTS, AND PRESENTATIONS?
You will know well in advance when your essays, projects, and presentations are due. If you are absent and it is unexcused, then your essay/project/presentation's final grade will have 5% deducted from the final grade for each day it is not submitted.
**Exceptions: I understand that you might find yourself in an extenuating circumstance that prevents you from following the rules. Should you find yourself in such a predicament speak to me as soon as possible - preferably before the assignment's due date. We can then work together to make sure your assignment is submitted on time or, if necessary, grant you an extension.
MR. BALOGH, DO YOU KEEP TRACK OF TARDIES?
Yes. My expectation is that students will be in their seat ready to work when the bell rings. I realize that sometimes “things happen,” but students will need to call upon all their persuasive skills for me to excuse you! Here are the penalties:
First two tardies = a warning
3rd and 4th tardies = detention
5th tardy = office referral
Please be on time. The first minutes of class will always have an important activity. Don’t miss it!
I MISSED A TEST! WHAT DO I DO?
If you’re absent the day of a test, please note the following:
MAY I USE THE BATHROOM?
At the appropriate time, students may excuse themselves from class to use the restroom. The student must sign his/her name and indicate the time left and time returned on the dedicated sign out sheet. I reserve the right to change this policy if a student appears to be abusing the policy. Don't forget the pass!
MR. BALOGH, ARE YOU GOING TO GIVE US AN EXTRA CREDIT ASSIGNMENT?
No. However, you may find you earned a few more points than an assignment was worth by demonstrating exceptional creativity and/or critical thinking.

You will know well in advance when your essays, projects, and presentations are due. If you are absent and it is unexcused, then your essay/project/presentation's final grade will have 5% deducted from the final grade for each day it is not submitted.
- Essays: I expect you to submit your essays to turnitin.com even if you are absent from school on the day it is due. Your final grade for the essay will be deducted 5 percentage points for each day it is late. For example, if I grade your essay and it scores an 86%, I will then count up how many days late it is and multiply that number by 5. I will subtract that product from 86 and the difference will be your final grade. So, if your essay was three days late that calculates to a loss of 15 percentage points on the essay making it worth 71%. What was once a solid B essay is now a C minus.
- Projects: If a project is due and you are going to be absent, turn it in early, ask a classmate to bring it for you, or have a family member bring it to school. Your final grade for the project will lose 5% for each day it is not turned in.
- Presentations: I expect you to arrive in class prepared to present. If your absence is unexcused then your final grade for the presentation will lose 5% for each day it is not completed. If you are part of a group and your absence is unexcused then your group will lose 5% from their final grade as well; however, I will give your group the option to present without you. Should your group choose to present without you the members who are present will need to find a way to include the information from your portion of the presentation. All group members will receive the same presentation grade regardless if all members participated in the presentation. The reason behind this is that a class presentation is the summation of many practice presentations. Think of this like a team sport. If you play a league game and one of your players doesn't attend, the game is still played and the win or the loss is still recorded for the entire team.

I MISSED A TEST! WHAT DO I DO?
If you’re absent the day of a test, please note the following:
- Make an appointment with me the day you return from having missed a test. Unless there are unusual circumstances, plan to make up the test at the next Tutorial session.
- If you do not show up for an appointment, your grade becomes a zero for that test.
- Develop the habit of studying early and often for tests. I guarantee you’ll do much better AND decrease your stress level.
