Period 1 and 2 - Today we began by sharing about our weekend. Period two had a few people visit some local Halloween haunts and two students (one for period 1 and one from period 2) went to see Jack Johnson. I'm always happy to see the students are doing fun things together outside of school. On the academic side of class we began with a quick write. Here is the question: How do I respond when faced with tough circumstances?

After student's shared their responses, I read to the class Maya Angelou's poem Still I Rise. After reading through the poem, students worked in their table groups to analyze one stanza from the poem and then present their findings to the class. Students were directed to look for similes, metaphors, personification, hyperbole, and onomatopoeia within their assigned stanza and then discuss the meaning of the figurative language. Period 2 had time to work on annotating the poem in class and most students finished. Period 1 had a little time to start but most students should complete this activity for homework. Here is the poem and the annotation guide:

Period 4 - Our quick write today was about culture in the United States. Here is the prompt:
Culture (noun) is defined as a particular society that has its own beliefs, ways of life, art, etc. (Merriam-Webster)
Living in the United States makes you a part of a large US culture. Describe this culture. What does it mean to be an US citizen? What are the cultural bonds that people in this country share?
After sharing and discussing student responses, students took notes on an introduction PowerPoint to Chinua Achebe's novel Things Fall Apart. Here is the PowerPoint in a pdf file:
