Class Work
Today we looked at more baby pics and then focused on constructing body paragraphs. We began by taking notes from this PowerPoint:
intro_to_body_paragraphs_ts_con_cd_cm.ppt |
Students then received this body paragraph outline:
body_paragraph_outline_template.docx |
Students then used highlighters to color code each section of the body paragraph.
Topic Sentence = Orange
Context = Yellow
Concrete Details = Green
Commentary = Blue
Closing/Transition Sentence = Pink/Purple
Next, students used their previous assignment, Uncovering Theme in Broken Chain, to select their theme and concrete details to include in the body paragraph outline. The students wrote their own themes and used them as part of their topic sentence. Most topic sentences looked similar to this: In Gary Soto's fictional short story Broken Chain, the theme (insert theme statement here) is revealed.
Next, students used their notes from the PowerPoint to write the context. We finished class by completing the concrete detail section and the commentary for the first concrete detail. Most students have the second half of the outline to complete for homework. Students will have a timed writing assignment in class on Friday which will challenge them to write a first draft of the body paragraph they are outlining for homework.
