Homework
Bring the two short stories back to our next class meeting. If you did not finish uncovering the theme for THE TURNIP, make sure you have it completed before you come to class.
Class Work
Students worked on identifying examples for the central conflict, climax, and resolution in two very short stories. After underlining their examples and labeling them as either CC (central conflict), C (climax), or R (resolution), students looked at each individual example and came up with single words to describe what has happening. After creating a list of words for each example, students found words within the list that could be used to describe all three examples. This narrowed down the list to two or three words. These words are called Thematic Topics. Students were then challenged to write one sentence that conveyed the universal theme of the story and included the Thematic Topics.
