Classwork
Students warmed up with a listening, memory, and visual tracking activity called I'm going on a picnic.
After the activity the students became acquainted with their English textbooks with a scavenger hunt. Finally, we annotated the short story included in the document above. The requirements for this annotation exercise are as follows:
Students need to have at least one annotation for each paragraph in the story. Students are encouraged to mark anything in the text that stands out to them but they have to include a note in the margin explaining why they marked that word, phrase, or sentence. Additionally, students should identify the elements of plot, the central conflict, thematic topics, and the theme.
The goal of annotating is to slow down our reading. We want to gain a deep understanding of the text and be able to make multiple connections between the text, our knowledge, and our experiences.
