Period 4 began with a quick write activity. The point of the quick write was to rank in order of importance the thematic topics found in The Catcher in the Rye. There is no right or wrong answer. Students were encouraged to use the knowledge they have of the novel and list them in an order that seemed to make the most sense to him/her. Here are the thematic topics:
- Alienation (being separated from others)
- Real vs. Superficial (phony)—focus not only on when Holden thinks someone else is a phony but also when he, too, does something “phony”.
- Hypocrisy
- Fear of losing one’s innocence (childhood)
- Loss of trust in adults
- Dealing with Failure & Pressure
- Anger
- Connection with Family
- Loss and grief
- Fear of success
- Wanting time to stop or be reversed
After the quick write students shared their top three themes and explained why chose one theme as the most important. Next, students had 15 minutes to write everything they knew about about the thematic topic and how it relates to The Catcher in the Rye. Responses were to be a one-page minimum. After the students wrote their ideas, they met up with their peers who wrote on the same thematic topic and shared their ideas. We will use the product of this writing activity tomorrow to begin writing thesis statements and finding supporting evidence from the text. Those students who completed the Dialectical Journal thoroughly will see their efforts pay off as we move forward to the essay. Finally, we finished class by reviewing the Creative Project Assignment. Students should come to class tomorrow with an idea of which project he/she will complete. See you then!
