Periods 1 and 2
We began class by looking at two definitions for the word segregation. Here they are:
The first definition, 2a, is the most common way students define segregation and that definition carries with it the idea that segregation is negative. The second definition, 2b, points out that segregation can also occur in ways that are not directly related to race, ethnicity, or social class. My question to the students: Is segregation always negative? I shared with the students this photo that I took here at SDA:
Students then brought up examples of how people are still segregated: separate boys and girls restrooms (segregation by gender), 18 and over music venues (segregation by age), and employees only signs at businesses. The goal this weekend is for students to keep their eyes open for where segregation occurs within their community. Then, bring the example to class so we can discuss segregation as it is occurring today with the intent of determining whether there are valid reasons to segregate people.
As part of homecoming week the school wide theme today was for teachers to dress like students and students to dress like teachers. I took advantage of this opportunity and extended the theme into the coursework by having students create a 15 question quiz based on their last reading assignment in Caged Bird (chapters 7-10). Students worked in their table groups to create a quiz that included multiple choice, true/false, matching, and short answer responses. During the last 15 minutes of class students took each others quiz. We will grade them on Monday.

English 10
Period 4
We began class by checking the vocabulary assignment that was due today and then we played a game of around the world. Mark had the longest winning streak so he was the winner for today. Next time Gian will start the game.
After the vocabulary review we continued the creative project presentations. There were a few students who were absent today that still need to present - those students have until Tuesday to complete the presentation part of the project.
The last 40 minutes of class were spent working in table groups. Students had to create a quiz for chapters 5-7 of Things Fall Apart. The quiz should have a total of 10 questions and include at least 3 questions from each chapter. Two of the questions must ask the quiz taker to determine the values revealed in traditions and/or proverbs that take place in chapters 5-7. Most groups needed the entire 40 minutes to make the quiz, so we will take the quizzes at the beginning of the period Monday. Have a great weekend. Don't forget to do your homework!
