Homework
English 9 - No Homework Tonight
English 10 - Final Draft must be submitted to turnitin.com by the start of class on Wednesday.
Classwork
English 9 - Students began class by working in groups to prepare and present one of four sections from their vocabulary exercises. After the presentations students took a quiz on the words. Quizzes have been graded and are posted on Aeries.
Next, students looked at the Act 1 Dialectical Journal assignment to find examples of light and dark imagery used in the play. Through act one, dark imagery seems to indicate feelings of sadness, anger, and confusion for Romeo. At the same time, the dark/night provides him with a feeling of protection/safety because he can be himself and hide from people who might judge him.
Light imagery is closely often scene through fire. Romeo holds a torch on the way to the Capulet's party and this torch/fire/light symbolizes the love he holds for Rosaline. At the party, Romeo sees Juliet for the first time and compares her to a torch that is brighter than all the others; again, the torch/fire/light symbolizes love that Romeo feels.
Students finished the period by labeling what is commonly referred to as the Kissing Sonnet. We did not discuss this sonnet in class today but we will go over it in more depth on Wednesday. Students will also choose a sonnet to memorize.
English 10 - We began class by stamping 2nd drafts of essay. Then we looked at several examples of integrated concrete details. The PowerPoint that contains these examples is below. After this review, students received their instructions on how to sign up for turnitin.com. If you did not receive the class ID and password please contact a friend in class and ask him/her for the information. Students also received a checklist to help them review their essay. The checklist is comprehensive. While it is not a mandatory assignment, the checklist will help to ensure that students have done everything that is required for the essay. The checklist is also attached below. The remainder of the period was spent working on typing and reviewing essays.
*A note about turnitin.com - In the past, students have come to Mr. Balogh on the day an essay is due and claimed that turnitin.com would not "work." If you find yourself in this situation, print out your paper or email Mr. Balogh a copy. By doing this, you will avoid the late-work penalty. While Mr. Balogh will not issue the penalty, he will not grade your essay until you have uploaded it to turnitin.com.
