We are getting into a groove within our classes now. Students understand the dialectical journal assignment and are demonstrating exceptional critical thinking skills through their analysis of Romeo and Juliet in English 9 and The Catcher in the Rye in English 10.
In English 9 we are on Act 1 scene 2 and the students are working in their table groups to complete their journal entries. In class we have discussed the use of character foil, oxymoron, dramatic irony, and foreshadowing. Most students were familiar with these literary devices from previous English classes. The students homework this weekend is to continue practicing and memorizing the Prologue of Romeo and Juliet. Performances are scheduled for this Tuesday.
In English 10 we read through Chapter 3 of Catcher as a class. This chapter introduced us to Holden's red hunting hat that is a symbol we will track through the course of this novel. Additionally, we met Ackley, Holden's inconsiderate neighbor in his dormitory. We also briefly met Stradlater, Holden's roommate. From the interactions between the characters. we are beginning to see how Holden relates to his peers.
