Classwork
English 9 - Today we reviewed our thesis statements and wrote a few examples. Students may use these examples for their own essay. We then wrote a the topic sentence for each body
paragraph based on the information in the thesis statement. Students also had time to work on the context and other sections of the outline. Students should have the introduction finished (except the hook and bridge) and both body paragraphs complete (except for the blue and pink sections).
Here is the thesis statement we wrote for prompt 1:
Antigone was right to commit civil disobedience because Creon's motivation to create a law did not take into account an individual's natural rights.
Here are the topic sentences we wrote based on this thesis statement:
TS1 - Creon’s motivation to create a law did not take into account an individual’s natural rights and this motivated Antigone to commit an act of civil disobedience.
TS2 - Antigone’s act of civil disobedience was right because the people of Thebes value natural rights before state laws.
Here are the thesis statements we wrote for prompt 2:
Thesis example 1: Antigone did not agree with the traditional roles for women in ancient Greece and she broke them in order to honor her brother.
Thesis example 2: To honor her brother, Antigone rebeled against the traditional expectations of women to prove Creon wrong.
TS1 - In ancient Greece, women are characterized to be weaker than men and unqualified to participate in important public decisions.
TS2 - Antigone rebeled against the traditional role of women in order to honor her brother and guarantee his natural right to be burried.

English 10 - Students turned in the final draft of their body paragraph today. We then took a vocabulary quiz. Students received their scores and they will be posted on Aeries by this evening. After reviewing the vocab quiz we listened to chapters 15 and 16 in Things Fall Apart. In chapter 15 students were asked to make two entries into their dialectical journal. The passages they choose to write on should reveal values and/or conflicts between the Ibo people and the Europeans. In chapter 16 the students should find two more passages that address specific conflicts created by the arrival of the "white man" in Ibo land. Remember that your response to each passage needs to be a half page long. Focus on context, character traits, motivation, conflicts, themes, symbolism, values, etc..
