We ended class by reading the next section of Antigone - The Chorus (Theban elders) have arrived at the request of the new king, Creon. The Chorus is ready to celebrate because the war between Eteocles and Polynices has ended and their city, Thebes, was not destroyed. Creon tells the Chorus he wants to speak to them because he values their knowledge and advice. Creon goes on to tell them of his edict - Eteocles be honored with a burial that includes all the traditions of a king's burial; however, anyone who buries the traitor Polynices will be punished by death. The Chorus supports Creon's decision to honor Eteocles for defending Thebes and punishing Polynices for leading the army that attacked Thebes.
English 10 - Students began class by reading about Cecil Rhodes. As we read, we looked to find evidence of why Cecil Rhodes wanted Britain to control all of Africa. As it turns out, Rhodes motivation was mostly political. He felt that the British was the "finest race in the world" and that "one should work for...bringing the whole of the uncivilized world under British rule" (Rhodes). You can download a copy of the text below.

As a class, we reviewed the study questions from chapter 1 of Things Fall Apart and then listened to the audio book for chapter 2. Chapter two provides evidence the people of Umuofia have developed very complex culture. On one page we learn about their traditions of war that include beheading opponents and using the skulls as drinking cups in ceremonies. On the next page we see evidence of a civil political system that relies on diplomacy and compromise to settle conflict.
Students had 10 minutes at the end of class to begin working on their homework
