Periods 1 and 2 completed this quick write:
Choose one of the following two prompts to write about.
- List all of the different times light and dark imagery appears in the play Romeo and Juliet. Think about the comparisons like torches and the sun as well as nighttime and the morning. Then, explain what you think the purpose of this imagery is.
- There are many types of love in Romeo and Juliet: unrequited, romantic, friendship, and family. Rank these in the order that you think are most significant to least significant in the context of this play. Finally, explain why you chose the one you did as the most significant.
Then, students turned in all of their quick writes for the Romeo and Juliet unit. Both periods finished their Friday English class by watching the remaining portions of the film adaptations of Romeo and Juliet. On Monday we will begin the writing process to complete an essay on Romeo and Juliet.
English 10
Period 4 began class by watching this film clip from the movie Six Degrees of Separation. Students were instructed to think about the thematic topics discussed in the film clip as well as the reason for Holden's quest in The Catcher in the Rye. We had a short discussion on the ideas presented in the clip immediately after viewing the clip.

Next, students received their graded Dialectical Journals. Please ask your student how he/she did and if there is anything he or she can do to improve the grade earned.
We then used the Dialectical Journals to begin completing the Quote Collector. A copy of the Quote Collector is available on the English 10 Assignments page. Additionally, students received the directions for the essay on a theme from The Catcher in the Rye.
First, we reviewed the topics listed on the directions for the essay and students chose one topic. Next, students wrote that thematic topic on the top line of the Quote Collector. I told students to skip over writing a thesis statement at this point in the writing process. Each student's task in class today was to find passages from The Catcher in the Rye that are related to the thematic topic he/she chose. The passage should be written down in the far left-hand column on the Quote Collector worksheet; there is space for 12 passages and students should find twelve passages to use. In the second column from the left, students should describe the setting and the action that surrounds the passage in the book. In other words, students should tell who says the passage, who it is said to, where the action takes place, and any other relevant information. The third column from the left is where students need to explain how the quote relates to the thematic topic he/she chose. The fourth and final column can be left blank for now. On Monday, students will use the information from the first three columns to write a thesis statement. Once the thesis statement is written, then students can work on the last column of the Quote Collector.
Many students worked well and finished nearly half of the Quote Collector in class. The homework for the weekend is to complete the Quote Collector. See you Monday!
