Period 1 and 2 - Using the annotations students made while reading Maya Angelou's poem Still I Rise, students wrote a thematic statement that included a topic from the poem, a message the student believes the author conveyed on that topic, and a focus on how the author conveyed that message. Next, we previewed vocabulary for chapters 1-6 in I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. This took up most of our time but each class was able to start the reading together. We covered the initial setting, the narrator, and what the narrator reveals about herself through her first self descriptions.

Period 4 - We began class with a quiz on the material we covered yesterday in the introduction to Things Fall Apart PowerPoint. Students were able to use their notes for this quiz.
After we corrected the quiz, I introduced Part 1 of our dialectical journal. I provided students with two entries as examples to model my expectations. Students copied these entries into their own journal. I also required students to draw a picture of the main character, Okonkwo, according to the description the narrator provides in the 3rd paragraph of Things Fall Apart. There will be a quiz on the first four chapters in class tomorrow.
Here is the document that details the instructions for the dialectical journal assignment. It can also be found in the assignments section for this class.
