Homework
English 9 - Final draft of sonnet is due tomorrow. You are required to have a first draft, second draft and final draft.
English 10 - Finish reading chapters 18-21. There will be a quiz on the chapters tomorrow. Additionally, quotes are due tomorrow (chapters 14-21).
Class Work
English 9 - We began class with a quick review of Romeo and Juliet by passing a balloon around the classroom. Students then had time to finish their partner quiz from yesterday. We then listened to Act 4 scene 1 and Act 4 scene 3. We skipped scene 2 and will start with scene 4 tomorrow. After listening to 4.1 students had to create a list that showed the Friar's plan to reunite Romeo and Juliet. After listening to scene 3 students had to list all of the fears Juliet expressed in her soliloquy at the end of the scene. We finished class by creating chart that compared how Juliet was seen by her family to who she really is.
English 10 - Students shared their Calligrams by setting up a gallery walk. Students had to take notes on their thoughts as they viewed the Calligrams. At the end of the activity, students shared their observations, idea, and connections with their table group and then wrote a conclusion about their experience. Students then looked at Holden's rant about education on page 131 and his solution on page 132. We connected these passages to thematic topics and then watched a clip from Six Degrees of Separation in which the main character delivers his analysis of The Catcher in the Rye. This video is a great example of how to use passages from the novel to support and explain themes within the story and then make conclusions. Students do this kind of synthesis when they write an essay. Here is the clip:
