In English 9 students started class by playing a memory games with vocabulary words. In Period One, we reviewed the Literary Devices worksheet and in Period Two we discussed the questions on Baz Luhrmann's adaptation of Romeo and Juliet. Period One needed the time to finish watching Act 1 of the film and complete their questions which we will review tomorrow. In Period 2 we spent the rest of the period previewing Act 2 by starting back up in our dialectical journals. I provided the examples for Act 2.1. Here they are if you need them:

No homework for English 9 tonight!
In English 10 students worked on writing "lead ins." This is an extension of the quiz they started yesterday. I lead students through a quick review of what information should be used to introduce a passage they are using to support their response to a question. Students then worked with a partner to revise their best response from yesterday's quiz. We finished the period by reading aloud chapter 13 of The Catcher in the Rye. Our class discussion of the events in this chapter centered on Holden and the things he has lost - friends, the fencing equipment, the respect of his teacher (old Spencer), his brother Allie, his gloves, the different schools he has been kicked out of - and yet he claims that he has never really lost anything. It seems as though Holden is in denial and it also seems that he puts up a wall between himself and most people he meets. This could be a way he protects himself because he can never really lose something (e.g. a good relationship) if he never has one.
The "Lead In" handout is in the file below. The homework for English 10 tonight is to finish reading chapter 13. I hope to see your parents at Back to School Night this evening!!
